Subicwater
Rehabilitates City Water Treatment Plant
The City Water Treatment plant supplies the drinking water requirement of the northern part of the City, of about 140,000 or around 70% of the total population of Olongapo City. The City North has an average daily demand of 16MLD, representing 50% of the City’s total demand of 30 MLD. Coverage is still at 76%, as the capacity of the plant is restrained by its old filters, diesel-driven pumps and motors, and a mixing tank whose base is ready to give in, compounded by old-corrosive pipe network traversing streets and houses.
Projections reveal that to increase coverage to a 100%, there is a need to boost the capacity of the plant to enable it to meet a projected demand of 34 MLD by 2012.
This Plant was built in 1950, and is one of the leased service concession assets of Subicwater. It has an ideal plant capacity of 26 MLD. But given its old structure, it was only able to supply around 80% of its capacity.
As part of a general rehabilitation and upgrading pIan, a 19MLD rapid gravity filters was built in December 2005 to complement the old filters. Thereafter, to improve pump capacity, and to eliminate noise hazard and smoke, last year, the eight(8) diesel-engine driven pumps were replaced by vertical turbine pumps and electric motors, with variable speed drive. This boosted distribution supply as the pumps could now bring water in areas formerly supplied from transferred water from the Freeport.
This year, Subicwater has completed the rehabilitation and upgrading of the old clarifier and has put in place a new mixing tank. The old clarifier was refurbished and upgraded to 16 MLD, from 9 MLD. Corroded parts were replaced, a flocculation well, tube modules and scrapers were installed to aid in the treatment process. A new mixing tank was constructed. These will improve not only the volume of water being treated but the quality of potable water being produced. It will likewise reduce operational costs due to lesser chemical dosing, and fewer frequency of cleaning the clarifier. Most importantly, our customers will experience improved pressure and better quality of water.
Recently awarded
to winning bidders are the replacement of the old filters and the
construction of a wastewater recovery tank to fully comply with environmental
standards. This will bring into completion the rehabilitation of this
six decade old facility.
