Subicwater Builds a toilet for Aetas of Mt. Mangpueng
On March 26, coinciding with the celebration of its 13th year anniversary, Subicwater, through all of its associates (employees), did a community service program to address the dream of the Aetas of Mt. Mangpueng.
Mt Mangpueng, is a village situated at the upstream of Sta. Rita River, within the boundaries of Brgy. Old Cabalan.
As early as 5:30 a.m., the associates headed by GM Edna G. Canlas were already assembled at the Main Office. At exactly 7:00, the group was on its way to Mt. Mangpueng. The associates trek the rocky and dusty road, passed four (4) river tributaries and hiked a distance. The inconveniences, however, made the journey more exciting.
The construction of a 2-cubicle toilet for the 150 Aeta families residing in the area was the main event. The provision of this facility has a symbolic objective- to evoke to the awareness of the natives the importance of a sanitary facility not only as part of health practices but, it is also one way to protect the river, which is the principal source of drinking water for Olongapo City during summer.
The group carried bags of cement, sand, hollow blocks and other construction materials. Each did their own share of labor; from carrying hollow blocks down the mountain, or bags of cement and sand, to mixing of cement, laying of the hollow-blocks, plastering the wall, construction of the roof, placing of the toilet bowl, and the laying of GI-pipes that will connect the spring water to an improvised water tank, then to the toilet.
Aside from the construction of the facility, Subicwater also donated five (5) cavans of rice, used clothes, shoes and bags, and distributed snacks and food, to the delight of the villagers, particularly, the children.
During the ceremonial turn over, GM Edna Canlas called for the support of the natives in the protection of the river. The village head committed to support the advocacy of Subicwater by keeping the water shed area free from water pollutants and other water obstructions.
Subicwater associates left Mt. Mapueng, maybe tired, but fulfilled in spirit. It is always rewarding to do an activity that benefits the marginalized sector of the community while at the same time beneficial to the environment.
